Zoe Jarvis
Large-scale Colored Pencil Drawings and Hand-cut and Layered Paper Art
Zoe Linn Jarvis is a Virginia-based full-time artist and small business entrepreneur. She is a colored pencil artist and paper artist, and her work has earned her numerous private commissions, exhibitions, and press including Wall Street Journal.
Zoe Linn Jarvis’s paper art is an honest labor. She often compares her cut paper creative process to painting a picture with paper. Zoe executes an artwork using three simple tools — an art knife, paper, and glue. Each piece of paper you see is individually cut out by hand, layered with other pieces of paper, and finally glued together. No machines, lasers, die cuts, or stencils are used. As a result no two shapes are the same in her paper artworks. Whereas a painter can quickly alter the composition with a smear of paint, no such solution exists working with paper. Instead, the medium demands each line and dot be cut with a knife and attached to the surface. The work presupposes irreversibility because removing pieces that have already been attached will leave scars. Zoe prides meticulous attention to detail, eye-catching color palettes, and clean craftsmanship in her client work and personal projects.
